Ghana’s national team goalkeeper, Richard Ofori, remains unfazed by social media criticism following the Black Stars’ 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) opener. Ofori, who plays for Orlando Pirates in the South African Premier Division, emphasized his focus on the upcoming matches and contributing to the team’s success.
Addressing the media after the Sunday night defeat, Ofori expressed his indifference to online comments, stating, “I hardly go to social media and stuff to listen to comments or whatsoever, so I don’t listen. I don’t even know what is going on there.” He maintained that staying focused on the game and helping his country were his top priorities.
The defeat prompted criticism on social media platforms, with disappointed fans blaming both players and head coach Chris Hughton. Ofori, however, asserted that the opinions on social media do not affect him, highlighting the importance of maintaining confidence and focus within the team.
Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew attributed the loss to a “lack of experience” in the Ghanaian squad, acknowledging that more than 10 players were participating in their first AFCON. Ayew emphasized the need for quick learning, stating, “we need to stand up and face the reality.” He acknowledged the challenges but emphasized the team’s determination to win upcoming matches.
While some supporters blamed Hughton for the team’s poor performance, labeling him as an “average coach not up to standard,” others criticized his coaching style as reactive rather than proactive. The discontent extended to Hughton’s approach in previous matches, with fans expressing a desire for a more inspiring and courageous coaching style.
Despite the setback, the team remains focused on the upcoming challenges, aiming to bounce back in the tournament.
