Former Black Stars Player Prince Tagoe Faces Auto Fraud Charges in Ghana

An Accra Circuit Court has ruled that former Black Stars player Prince Tagoe must pay GH₵10 for every dollar in an ongoing auto fraud case. Tagoe has already reimbursed $21,000 (equivalent to GH₵210,000), but a remaining balance of $19,000 remains.

During the court proceedings, Tagoe asserted his intention to repay the money based on the 2021 dollar rate, a proposal contested by Prosecution led by Detective Chief Inspector Agartha Abena Asantewa. The prosecution argued that the funds provided to Tagoe by the complainant were in dollars, and they have pegged the exchange rate at GH₵10, not reflecting the current forex market rate.

Prince Tagoe stands accused of defrauding Black Stars Assistant Coach George Boateng of $40,000, supposedly for importing a Lexus sports utility vehicle. Tagoe, charged with defrauding by false pretenses, has denied the allegations but has made partial payments totaling GH¢20,000, GH¢70,000, and GH¢71,000.

The court granted Tagoe bail in the amount of GH¢100,000 with three sureties, one of whom must be a civil servant, and allowed one surety to be justified with landed property. The complainant, George Antwi Boateng, a former player and coach, reported the case.

Detective Chief Inspector Agartha Abena Asantewaa detailed how Tagoe, once under Boateng’s management in Germany, agreed to import a vehicle for Boateng at the cost of $40,000. The money was deposited into Tagoe’s account in January 2021, but he failed to deliver the promised vehicle, claiming financial constraints.

The court adjourned the matter to February 21, 2024.
