Ghanaian Tennis Sensation Johnson Acquah Triumphs at InterRecruit West Africa Championship

In a thrilling finale at the National Tennis Center in Accra, Johnson Acquah, the Ghanaian tennis star, emerged victorious at the InterRecruit West Africa Tennis Championship. The week-long tournament brought together players from Togo, Benin, and Ghana, with Acquah showcasing exceptional form and determination.

Facing off against compatriot Lemack Bagerbaseh in the final, Acquah secured a hard-fought victory in straight sets (7-6(5), 7-6(3)), after an intense battle lasting 2 hours and 15 minutes. Remarkably, Acquah did not drop a single point throughout the tournament, demonstrating his dominance on the court.

An elated Acquah shared, “It’s been a long journey, but a very special one. I played some of my best tennis, honestly.” He expressed comfort and confidence during the earlier rounds, emphasizing his exceptional performance in the quarter-final and semi-final matches.

Acquah’s triumph earned him a well-deserved $300 prize, while Bagerbaseh received $200 for his runner-up position. In the women’s category, Noudogbessi Rodia from Benin clinched the title in a round-robin format, with Ghana’s Tracy Ampah securing an impressive second place.

Founded by Sadia Mayou, the InterRecruit West Africa Tennis Open aims to promote educational scholarships and talent development across the West Africa sub-region. Caroline Mayou, sister of the founder, praised the event’s expansion to include West African participants.

This year’s tournament garnered support from various sponsors, including the Michael Nortey Foundation, Egalite Sports Bar and Restaurant, George Darko Tennis Foundation, Fine Natural Mineral Water, PMsports, Emmanuel Mensah Tennis and Education Foundation, KDul Interco, Carathimas and Associates, Tennis Foundation Ghana, and the Ghana Tennis Federation.
