Guinea Calls for Caution Amid Tragic Celebrations Following AFCON Victory

The Guinean Football Federation (Feguifoot) and former football star Pascal Feindouno have jointly appealed for restraint following the tragic deaths of fans celebrating Guinea’s first win at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Guinea secured a 1-0 victory against The Gambia, triggering widespread jubilation that led to six fatalities in the capital, Conakry.

Feguifoot emphasized the need for measured celebrations to prevent further accidents, urging fans to prioritize their safety. Guinea, known for its passionate football culture, experienced an outpouring of joy as fans took to the streets after the win in Ivory Coast. The team’s success marked a significant moment, as it was only their third victory in the last 15 Nations Cup matches since 2012.

The tragic incidents included fatal road accidents and injuries, prompting Feguifoot to underscore the importance of celebrating responsibly. Pascal Feindouno, a prominent figure in Guinea’s football history, echoed these sentiments, urging fans to support the team without endangering lives.

Guinea, currently second in Group C with four points, faces Senegal in another West African derby for top spot. Despite the team’s success, the call for restraint remains paramount as the country aims to secure its first AFCON title in the tournament’s 14th edition.

As Guinea’s passionate fan base, which traveled extensively to support the team, continues to celebrate, the plea for caution resonates ahead of the crucial match against Senegal. The AFCON, ongoing since January 13, will culminate in the final in Abidjan on February 11.
