Joe Aribo is underlining the defensive prowess of the Super Eagles ahead of their round of 16 face-off with Cameroon in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Despite still having four group stage games to play, Nigeria boasts one of the best defensive records in the tournament, having conceded just one goal—joining the ranks of defending champions Senegal, Morocco, and Mali.
Cameroon, with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Gambia, secured a spot in the last 16, setting the stage for an exciting showdown with Nigeria. Manager Jose Peseiro has focused on making his team difficult to beat in the last two matches, though criticisms have arisen concerning their offensive performance, with only one goal scored from open play in the group stage.
Aribo, acknowledging the defensive solidity of the Super Eagles, recognizes the need for efficiency in attack during the knockout rounds. Speaking to reporters after Monday’s win against Guinea-Bissau, he expressed confidence that as the tournament progresses, Nigeria will become more prolific in front of goal.
“I know as the tournament progresses, we’ll find the back of the net a lot more. One thing about us is that we are doing very well, keeping clean sheets, and we’re strong and solid at the back,” Aribo stated in the mixed zone.
In the Super Eagles’ 1-0 win over Guinea-Bissau, Aribo, who made his first start in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, played for 63 minutes before making way for Alex Iwobi. Aribo expressed the honor he feels representing Nigeria and his country, emphasizing the positive feeling associated with the experience.
