Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, currently on international duty with Nigeria in Ivory Coast, has been awarded the Marc-Vivien Foé trophy, an honor designated for African players in the French Ligue 1. Osimhen scored the equalizer for Nigeria against Equatorial Guinea in their first AFCON Group A game.
The 25-year-old, who played a standout season with LOSC Lille in the French Ligue 1, was unable to collect the award in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. He secured the prestigious trophy three years after initially earning it.
The Marc-Vivien Foé Award is named after the late Cameroonian player who tragically passed away on the pitch during the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2003. It is given to the best player representing an African national football team in the French Ligue 1.
Osimhen becomes the second Nigerian to receive this accolade, following Vincent Enyeama’s win with LOSC Lille in the 2013/2014 season. Notable footballers like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gervinho, Nicolas Pepe, Andre Ayew, and Jean-Michael Seri have also been recipients of the Marc-Vivien Foé Award in the past.
