Bafana Bafana’s Mashego Warns Super Eagles: ‘We Have a Solid Defense

South Africa’s impressive journey at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations continued as they secured a spot in the semifinals, marking their first appearance in the last four in 24 years. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams emerged as the hero, saving four penalties in a tight encounter against Cape Verde.

Terrence Mashego, one of the Mamelodi Sundowns players in the Bafana Bafana squad, made his AFCON debut during the intense match, replacing Thapelo Maseko. As South Africa gears up to face Nigeria in the semifinals, Mashego acknowledges the challenge posed by the Super Eagles, emphasizing that it will be a difficult game.

Reflecting on the team’s recent successes, including a notable victory over pre-tournament favorites Morocco and a goalless draw against Tunisia, Mashego spoke to reporters about the upcoming clash with Nigeria. He highlighted the strength of both squads but expressed confidence in Bafana Bafana’s defensive capabilities, having gone three games without conceding.

When questioned about facing Victor Osimhen, the reigning African Footballer of the Year, Mashego confidently stated, “We also have a good defense; now we’ve gone three games without conceding, so we have a very good defense, we are ready for any battle.”

Maintaining a focused approach, Mashego emphasized the importance of taking one game at a time and hinted at the possibility of reaching the final. However, he stressed the need to avoid unnecessary pressure.

As South Africa’s coach Hugo Broos monitors the fitness of Thapelo Maseko ahead of the semifinal clash with Nigeria, Mashego’s assurance about the team’s defensive strength adds an element of anticipation to this crucial encounter.
