Head coach Jose Peseiro has disclosed the strategic model behind the Super Eagles’ success in reaching the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Despite initial challenges and disappointing results leading up to the tournament, Peseiro’s adjustments, particularly adopting a compact 3-4-3 formation, proved pivotal in Nigeria’s journey to the final.
Initially experimenting with a 4-3-3 setup in the first game against Equatorial Guinea, Peseiro’s shift to the 3-4-3 formation showcased a more organized and defensively solid Super Eagles side, securing a crucial 1-0 victory against hosts Cote d’Ivoire in Abidjan.
Maintaining this tactical structure throughout the tournament, Nigeria secured victories against Guinea-Bissau, Cameroon, Angola, and South Africa, earning them a spot in the AFCON final for the first time in eleven years.
Peseiro attributed the team’s success to prioritizing tactical work over physical aspects, stating, “We don’t work on physical aspects. We work on tactics.” Emphasizing the changing landscape of football, the former Porto boss highlighted the importance of training with the ball, focusing on counterattacks, defense, and transitions.
Explaining the rationale behind their chosen 3-4-3 system, Peseiro noted its success in minimizing defensive vulnerabilities, conceding only two goals throughout the tournament. As the Super Eagles prepare to face familiar rivals Cote d’Ivoire in the AFCON final, Peseiro’s tactical approach stands as a key factor in Nigeria’s pursuit of their fourth AFCON title.
