William Troost-Ekong was named the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Player of the Tournament for his stellar performances with the Super Eagles.
The Super Eagles’ vice-captain has now secured his first major trophy with Greek club PAOK Thessaloniki, following their victory over Aris on Sunday night, as reported by Sportblog247.com.
Troost-Ekong, who joined PAOK for approximately €1 million after a three-year stint at Watford FC and a loan spell at Salernitana, has made only 10 appearances in the domestic Super League 1. Despite limited game time, he has enjoyed a successful 2024.
The 30-year-old’s impressive year began with a silver medal and the Player of the Tournament award at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria. He has now added a major club trophy to his accolades with PAOK.
In a decisive match at Harilaou Stadium, PAOK secured a 2-1 victory over Aris, ending the league season with 80 points, just two points ahead of AEK Athens. This triumph marks PAOK’s fourth Super League 1 title.
Recently returning to full training after undergoing surgery following the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Troost-Ekong is set to rejoin the Super Eagles for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic.
Before that, he plans to host a charity match in Akwa Ibom through the Troost-Ekong Foundation, as a way of giving back to his community.
