Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick has expressed confidence in the NFF’s capacity to fund Finidi George’s selection of foreign assistants, according to reports from Sportblog247.com.
Following George’s appointment as the new head coach of the Nigerian national team, discussions arose about his preference for foreign assistants over local options like Daniel Amokachi and Emmanuel Amunike. Pinnick, speaking to Arise TV, endorsed George’s right to choose his coaching staff, citing precedents of foreign assistants in Nigerian football history.
Pinnick referenced past instances where foreign assistants played pivotal roles in coaching setups, including Bonfrere Jo, who eventually took over from Clemens Westerhof, and assistants to coaches like Oliseh and Siasia. He emphasized that such requests are not uncommon and should be respected.
While reports initially suggested financial constraints on hiring foreign-based head coaches, Pinnick affirmed that funding for foreign assistants should not be an issue. He emphasized the importance of backroom staff in a coach’s success and suggested that discussions on funding should be held transparently with George.
Despite reports of approaches to US-based Nigerian coach Michael Nsien, who reportedly declined an offer due to salary disparities, Pinnick maintained that securing foreign assistants for George’s team is feasible with proper budgeting and negotiation.
Pinnick’s remarks underline the NFF’s commitment to supporting George’s vision for the Super Eagles while navigating financial considerations.
