Arsenal’s Arthur Okonkwo Torn Between Representing England or Nigeria

Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has revealed that he has yet to decide whether to represent England or Nigeria on the international stage, Sportblog247.com reports.

Okonkwo enjoyed an impressive season with Wrexham in League Two last season, helping the club gain promotion to League One. The 22-year-old shot-stopper registered 14 clean sheets and conceded 30 goals in 36 games.

Following his performances, Okonkwo’s name has been mentioned in connection with the Super Eagles team, especially given the instability in the goalkeeping position. The 22-year-old, born in London to Nigerian parents, has previously represented the English youth sides.

Okonkwo is eligible to switch to Nigeria’s Super Eagles since he has not yet played for the English senior team. However, he has never expressed a clear willingness to represent Nigeria on the international stage, despite being far from a call-up to the Three Lions, who have a wealth of goalkeeping options.

In a recent interview, Okonkwo indicated that he remains hopeful for a Three Lions call-up, although Nigeria is also a possibility. “I need to keep playing and carry on my journey. I’m still really ambitious to play at the international level. I can still play for England or Nigeria, and I’ve not made a choice yet,” Okonkwo told The Mirror.

For many players who have the option to represent a European country or Nigeria, the Super Eagles often become a second option. It seems Okonkwo is hoping for an opportunity with England, but if that doesn’t materialize, he would consider playing for Nigeria.

Okonkwo is set to leave Arsenal permanently when his contract expires at the end of May, and he is expected to join Wrexham.
