FIFA has issued a stern warning to Zambia’s football association, potentially jeopardizing the participation of the women’s team in the upcoming Olympics. The threat comes in response to accusations of financial misconduct against FAZ president, Andrew Kamanga, and other officials. Kamanga faces charges related to alleged misuse of government funds, purportedly used to finance trips for associates. FIFA’s concern over the matter prompted a demand for documentation from FAZ.
Additionally, FIFA directed FAZ to proceed with its Annual General Meeting (AGM) despite a court injunction filed against Kamanga, accusing him of constitutional violations. Failure to hold the AGM could result in FAZ’s suspension, according to FIFA. However, a judge upheld the injunction, postponing the AGM.
The situation remains unresolved, with another court hearing scheduled. Reuben Kamanga, FAZ’s general secretary, urged members to remain calm, emphasizing that it’s premature to predict FIFA’s immediate actions.
Amidst these governance issues, Zambia’s women’s team, which recently qualified for the Olympics, faces uncertainty. The team’s coach, Bruce Mwape, remains under FIFA investigation following allegations of misconduct during the Women’s World Cup. Mwape denies these allegations.
