In a ceremonious event attended by Nigeria’s Sports Minister Senator John Enoh and the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, Finidi George was formally introduced as the new Super Eagles coach.
During the unveiling, the NFF confirmed that former Super Eagles striker Daniel Amokachi and Abiden Baruwa would serve as assistant coach and goalkeeper coach, respectively.
With the aim of guiding Nigeria to the 2026 World Cup, Finidi, who boasts a Champions League win with Ajax in 1995, faces his first challenge in June against South Africa and Benin. The team currently sits third in the group, trailing Rwanda and Bafana Bafana.
Emphasizing his fearless approach, Finidi expressed that pressure is not a factor for him and called for support from key stakeholders, including the media.
“In life, you cannot be afraid. As you see me here, I am a quiet person but I’m not afraid of anything. The worst you can get in football is not getting the result, the best you can get is winning all the time, and I will try my best to make sure that the team functions properly and we start winning games,” Finidi stated during the unveiling.
“I don’t think I have pressure. I have a tough skin, and I want to appeal to you guys, the media, we need your support.
“For me, personally, my first target is to ensure we qualify for the World Cup. While AFCON qualifiers are on the horizon, my focus is on these two upcoming games against South Africa and Benin. If we can secure victories, we’ll set the tone.”
In the coming days, Finidi is set to announce his squad for the crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
