Former Super Eagles forward Oladimeji Lawal has expressed confidence in Finidi George’s ability to lead the national team to success, following his appointment as head coach, Sportblog247.com reports.
The Nigeria Football Federation recently confirmed Finidi George as the new coach of the Super Eagles. Initially serving as interim coach after Jose Peseiro’s departure post-2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Finidi’s promotion to the permanent role comes with high expectations.
Despite concerns over his limited coaching experience, having previously held roles at Enyimba and as assistant at PEC Zwolle, Finidi has garnered support from retired Nigerian footballers like Ifeanyi Udeze and Paul Obiefule.
Lawal, who made three appearances for Nigeria and scored one goal during his career, voiced his belief in Finidi’s readiness for the challenge ahead.
“I am confident Finidi will not disappoint Nigerians, understanding the gravity of the task at hand,” Lawal told Complete Sports.
“Spending 20 months as assistant to Jose Peseiro would have equipped him with valuable insights, complemented by his own expertise. He knows the players well and is poised to deliver under pressure.”
Finidi’s immediate focus is preparing the Super Eagles for crucial World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin in June. Initially signed on a one-year contract, his tenure could extend to two years based on performance and results.
