Huddersfield Town Releases Five Nigeria-Eligible Players, Including AFCON Squad Member

Huddersfield Town has announced their retained and released list following the conclusion of the 2023-2024 season, revealing that five players of Nigerian descent have been released.

The Terriers have parted ways with versatile forward Charles Ondo, Mustapha Olagunju, David Adewoju, Hazeem Bakre, and Aaron Ojungu.

Madrid-born Charles Ondo was named in Equatorial Guinea’s squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he was a non-playing substitute in all their matches, including a 1-1 draw with the Super Eagles. The 20-year-old, who has three caps for Equatorial Guinea, remains eligible to represent Nigeria as he is an U21 player. Ondo joined Huddersfield Town as a scholar in the summer of 2020, made two senior appearances for the club, and was loaned to Irish club Waterford FC in the second half of the 2022-2023 campaign to gain first-team experience.

Mustapha Olagunju, the elder brother of Chelsea center-back Saheed Olagunju, joined Huddersfield Town at the U17 level and rose through the youth ranks to make his first-team debut against Plymouth Argyle in the third round of the FA Cup in January 2021. The 22-year-old experienced loan spells at Tadcaster Albion, Welling United, Port Vale, Ebbsfleet United, and Crawley Town between 2020 and 2024.

David Adewoju, Hazeem Bakre, and Aaron Ojungu will depart Huddersfield Town upon the expiry of their contracts on June 30 without making their first-team debuts.
