Taiwo Awoniyi’s Nottingham Forest secured their Premier League status thanks to Fulham’s 4-2 victory over Luton Town, according to Sportblog247.com.
Luton Town needed to defeat Fulham by eleven goals and hope that Nottingham Forest lost to already-relegated Burnley to have any chance of staying in the Premier League. However, their hopes were dashed at Kenilworth Road.
Fulham took the lead with Harry Wilson’s brilliant assist allowing Adama Traore to score his second goal of the season. Calvin Bassey’s foul on Chiedozie Ogbene then allowed Carlton Morris to equalize for Luton from the penalty spot.
Raúl Jiménez put Fulham back in front just before half-time, assisted again by Harry Wilson. Jiménez added another goal, but Alfie Doughty pulled one back for Luton, keeping their hopes alive.
The game was sealed in the 68th minute when Traore set up Wilson for his fourth goal of the season, with Alex Iwobi’s run playing a crucial role in the build-up.
At Turf Moor, Chris Wood scored a brace in the opening fifteen minutes for Nottingham Forest, cooling any nerves. Josh Cullen pulled one back for Burnley, but their relegation was already confirmed.
Taiwo Awoniyi replaced Wood in the 79th minute, while Ola Aina didn’t feature. Despite not playing, there was joy in the Forest dressing room as their top-flight status was secured for another season.
Awoniyi, Aina, Bassey, and Iwobi will now prepare for Nigeria’s crucial World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic.
