Frank Ogochukwu Onyeka, the defensive midfielder for both Brentford and the Super Eagles, has assured fans that Nigeria will leave nothing to chance in their upcoming World Cup qualifying matches, according to Sportblog247.com.
Having played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s journey to a second-place finish at AFCON 2023, Onyeka highlighted the positive impact of newly appointed coach Finidi George, describing him as instrumental during the tournament and now a welcomed figure leading the team.
“He’s a great coach, a good person. He supported the players during AFCON, and now that he’s the head coach, I think everyone is happy,” Onyeka remarked in an interview with Tobi Adepoju at the GTech Community Stadium.
Nigeria’s upcoming matches against South Africa and Benin Republic hold critical importance after a slow start in the World Cup qualifiers with draws against Rwanda and Lesotho. Onyeka emphasized the team’s determination to reverse their fortunes.
“We have to approach these games with everything we’ve got because they mean a lot to us and to the nation. Two points from two games is not ideal, so we need victories in our next two matches. We’ll give our all and be prepared,” added the former FC Midtjylland player.
Following the South Africa clash, Nigeria will face Benin Republic at The Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Ivory Coast. Onyeka, who made his Super Eagles debut under Gernot Rohr in 2020, acknowledged the challenge posed by familiar opponents.
“We know Gernot Rohr’s approach, and it won’t be easy. African teams are tough opponents, so we’ll approach the match with the seriousness it deserves in our quest for a win,” Onyeka concluded confidently.
