The 2024 World Athletics Relays made history by serving as Olympic qualifiers for all five relay events at the upcoming Paris Olympics, marking a significant milestone for the sport.
Nigeria, fielding four relay teams, enjoyed remarkable success at the World Relays, with all four teams securing qualification for the Olympics. This achievement marks the first time since 2004 that Nigeria will compete in all four relay events at the quadrennial event.
The Nigerian campaign began with a thrilling performance in the mixed 4x400m relay, where the quartet of Samuel Ogazi, Ella Onojuvwevwo, Chidi Okezie, and Esther Elo Joseph secured Olympic qualification by finishing second in their heat behind the USA.
In the men’s 4x400m relay, Dubem Nwachukwu, Dubem Amene, Sikiru Adeyemi, and Chidi Okezie delivered an outstanding performance, clocking their fastest time in 20 years to secure a spot in the Olympics.
The women’s and men’s 4x100m relay teams also demonstrated their prowess, with the women’s team winning their heat and the men’s team finishing second in theirs, securing Nigeria’s first men’s 4x100m Olympic ticket in 16 years.
With 14 teams per event qualifying in Nassau, the remaining Olympic berths will be awarded based on top lists during the qualification period. The women’s 4x400m team, currently ranked second on the top lists, aims to secure one of the remaining spots within the Olympic qualification period.
Nigeria’s impressive performance at the World Relays underscores the nation’s strength in relay events and sets the stage for an exciting Olympic campaign in Paris.
