Ola Aina, who played all seven games for the Super Eagles at the AFCON 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast, is optimistic ahead of Nigeria’s World Cup qualifier against South Africa, Sportblog247.com reports.
The 27-year-old Nottingham Forest full-back has been a consistent performer for Nuno Espirito Santo’s team this season, despite being sidelined for nearly two months due to injury.
Aina, who played a full 120 minutes against South Africa at AFCON 2023 and missed a crucial spot-kick in the penalty shoot-out, is eager for the upcoming match. Nigeria will host Hugo Broos’ South Africa on June 7th in their third World Cup qualifying game, with high expectations following two consecutive draws.
Speaking ahead of the game, Aina emphasized the team’s desire to win and make a strong start under new coach Finidi George. “What is on my mind is to win and progress and also to welcome the new coach. The appointment of the coach is good for the team and the nation,” the former Chelsea player said, as quoted by News Africa Now.
Aina missed the March international break due to injury, with Bright Osayi-Samuel taking over the right wing-back position. Consequently, Aina missed Finidi’s first two games against Ghana and Mali, where Finidi was acting as interim coach.
After the South Africa match, the Super Eagles will travel to Ivory Coast to face Gernot Rohr’s Benin Republic in the final international break of the 2023/2024 football season.
