Rangers’ Title Hopes Dwindle After Loss to Celtic

Dessers’ goal proved insufficient as Rangers slipped in their pursuit of the Scottish League title.

Dessers has impressively contributed 21 goals and eight assists across 51 games for Rangers this season, surpassing his target of 25 goal involvements.

John Lundstram endured a night to forget at Celtic Park, scoring an own goal and receiving a red card, reducing Rangers to ten men for the entire second half, according to Sportblog247.com.

Heading into the Old Firm derby, Rangers had hoped to draw level on points with Celtic, who have clinched the Scottish League title 53 times.

Fabio Silva came close to breaking the deadlock for Rangers in the 21st minute. However, his header from a James Tavernier cross narrowly missed the target.

As the home crowd rallied behind them, Celtic gradually seized control of the game. The deadlock was finally broken in the 35th minute when Callum McGregor’s run and pass set up Matthew O’Riley, who fired past Jack Butland.

Just three minutes later, Rangers’ woes deepened as John Lundstram inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net, extending Celtic’s lead to two goals.

However, Cyriel Dessers provided a glimmer of hope for Rangers five minutes before halftime. Dujon Sterling’s header from a Borna Barisic cross allowed the Nigerian striker to nod home his 21st goal of the season.

Rangers’ task became even more daunting when Lundstram was shown a red card for a late tackle on Alistair Johnson just before halftime, leaving them with ten men for the remainder of the match.

With only two playoff games remaining, Rangers’ chances of clinching the league title have significantly diminished. Their next challenge will be the Scottish Cup final against Celtic on May 25th.
