William Troost-Ekong, vice-captain of Nigeria’s national football team, has welcomed Finidi George’s appointment as head coach of the Super Eagles, expressing his admiration for the former Ajax star. Troost-Ekong, a veteran defender with 71 international caps, described Finidi as a true legend of the game, highlighting his impact both in Nigeria and abroad.
Having represented the Dutch national team at the youth level before switching allegiance to Nigeria, Troost-Ekong has been a stalwart in the Super Eagles defense since his debut in 2015. He praised Finidi’s achievements at Ajax and Enyimba, emphasizing the coach’s humility despite his success.
Troost-Ekong’s own achievements, including winning the Player of the Tournament at the 2023 AFCON, showcase his prowess on the field. Currently recovering from an injury sustained during the tournament, he is poised to lead the Super Eagles in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Rwanda.
With Finidi at the helm, the Super Eagles aim to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, currently sitting third in Group C with two points from two matches.
