Finidi George may soon be on his way out after less than three months on the job, as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is reportedly planning to appoint a new technical adviser for the Super Eagles. This new adviser would become Finidi George’s immediate superior, according to Sportblog247.com.
Finidi George was appointed by the NFF in April, nearly two months after the expiration of Jose Peseiro’s contract. Previously, Finidi worked as an assistant under Peseiro and was appointed interim coach after the Portuguese coach’s departure.
However, Finidi’s tenure has not gone as planned. As interim coach, the former Nigeria international led Nigeria to a victory over Ghana but suffered a loss to Mali. Following his permanent appointment, Finidi faced high expectations to lead the Super Eagles to victory over South Africa and Benin in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Unfortunately, Nigeria played to a 1-1 draw with South Africa and shockingly lost 2-1 to Benin at a neutral venue. These results have put Nigeria in a difficult position in the World Cup qualifiers, requiring them to win at least four of their last six games to have a chance of qualifying.
In a recent development, ScoreNigeria reports that the NFF has scheduled a meeting with Sports Minister Owan Enoh to discuss appointing a new technical adviser. The NFF is seeking someone with more coaching experience, likely a foreign coach, under whom Finidi would work.
News from the NFF headquarters is expected in the coming days as they strategize before the next set of qualifiers.
