Brighton & Hove Albion are set to miss out on signing Nigerian forward Philip Otele, as he is poised for a move to the United Arab Emirates. The Seagulls had shown genuine interest in Otele before the unexpected departure of CFR Cluj’s former player Roberto De Zerbi from the American Express Stadium at the end of the 2023-2024 season.
Brighton’s Premier League rivals, Brentford, scouted Otele in January 2024 with a view to a potential transfer, but they did not follow up with an official bid to the Romanian club.
According to Sportblog247.com, CFR Cluj has accepted a €4.5 million (approximately N7.3 billion) bid from UAE Pro League side Al Wahda for Otele. Otele’s agent, Andrei Balmos, confirmed that there is an agreement in place between CFR Cluj and Al Wahda for his client. While full details of the deal were not disclosed, reports indicate that Otele will earn €1.5 million annually.
Otele joined CFR Cluj from UTA Arad last summer and had an impressive season, helping the Romanian side challenge for the Liga 1 title, which they missed by just three points. He scored 18 goals in 40 appearances during the regular season and playoffs, finishing as the joint-top scorer in the division alongside FC Steaua București forward Florinel Coman.
In preparation for Otele’s departure, CFR Cluj has confirmed the signing of Adrian Păun, who is returning to the club.
