Nigeria’s Olympic-Bound Wrestlers Commence Training Camp in Germany

The Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) has announced that the overseas training camp for its wrestlers preparing for the 2024 Paris Olympics will kick off on Monday in Saarbrucken, Germany.

Daniel Igali, President of the NWF, revealed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan, stating that the international training follows the ongoing local camp in Yenagoa, scheduled to conclude on Sunday.

“Preparations for the Olympics are progressing well. We’ve been in camp in Yenagoa for over two weeks, and the training has been productive,” Igali said.

“We have five athletes bound for the Olympics, each supported by three training partners currently in camp. Ashton Mutuwa, based in the U.S., is the only male athlete not in camp yet due to his unique circumstances.”

“Adekuoroye, also based in the U.S., has joined us, while Mutuwa will join the overseas camp to maintain his training setup in the U.S., which we are closely monitoring,” he added.

Igali emphasized the federation’s satisfaction with Mutuwa’s training arrangement and praised Adekuoroye’s progress, noting her readiness for the Olympics.

“We anticipate the wrestlers will be in Germany for about three weeks, extending possibly until late July, ahead of the Games starting in early August,” Igali stated.

Head coach of the female wrestling team, Purity Akuh, expressed confidence in the athletes’ preparation, aiming for medal success at the Paris Games.

The Nigerian team for the Olympics includes six wrestlers, with Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Blessing Oborodudu (68kg), Odunayo Adekuoroye (57kg), and Hannah Reuben (76kg) among the female competitors. Christiana Ogunsanya and Esther Kolawole will also compete in the women’s 62kg category, while Ashton Mutuwa represents Nigeria in the men’s 125kg category.
