NPFL Round-Up: Rangers Clinch Title, Sporting Lagos Relegated, Akwa United Survive

Sporting Lagos will play in the Nigerian National League next season following their defeat in Ibadan today.

The 2023/2024 NPFL season concluded today with an emotional Matchday 38 for fans across various clubs. Enugu Rangers lifted the league title, while Sporting Lagos faced relegation. Sportblog247.com provides a detailed report on the final day of action in the Nigerian league.

The final NPFL Matchday saw Enugu Rangers claim their 8th league title with a 2-1 victory over Gombe United, despite playing away from home.

Akwa United secured their place in the league with a 3-1 win over Rivers United. John Ubong opened the scoring for the home side and added another with six minutes remaining. Sani Suleiman scored Akwa United’s third, while Nwangwa Nyima netted a consolation for Rivers.

Bendel Insurance suffered a 2-0 defeat against Bayelsa United at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, despite already being relegated. Doma United drew 1-1 with Abia Warriors.

Mbaoma Chijioke claimed the league’s golden boot after scoring for Enyimba in their match against Plateau United. Alade Balogun added a second for Finidi George’s former club.

Kano Pillars went 3-0 up against Lobi Stars within fifty minutes, thanks to a brace from Adamu Musa and a goal from Ibrahim Nura. Lobi Stars staged a spirited second-half comeback, scoring twice, but Kano Pillars held on for a home victory.

Kwara United cruised to a 4-0 win over already-relegated Heartland, while Niger Tornadoes emerged victorious in their 2-1 clash against Sunshine Stars.

Remo Stars secured second place on the NPFL table by defeating Katsina United at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne. Super Eagles wing-back Ismail Sodiq opened the scoring, followed by Dayo Ojo’s goal. Michael Okoro Ibe pulled one back for Katsina United, but it served only as a consolation.

A first-half goal from Dumte Pyagbara sealed all three points for Shooting Stars at the Lekan Salami Stadium, condemning Sporting Lagos to relegation from the NPFL.
