Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has opened up about his costly mistake in the round of 16 clash against Tunisia in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). In the second half, Youssef Msakni’s long-range shot slipped through Okoye’s hands, resulting in a goal that led to Nigeria’s elimination from the tournament.
Okoye faced heavy criticism and has not featured in any matches for the Super Eagles since then, though he has been a substitute on five occasions. In an interview with OmaSports TV, the German-born goalkeeper expressed his regret and shared how he has moved on from the incident.
“When I looked back at that moment, I knew I had to do better. It pains me till today. This is the first time that I really talk about it,” Okoye said. “You can see it as a mistake because I had to keep the ball out of the goal. I don’t want things like this to happen, but mistakes happen. Even the best, like Manuel Neuer, make mistakes. It’s part of the game.”
He added, “It’s hard for me as a young boy to go through what happened. It’s more about letting your teammates, family, and country down. I know I didn’t do well in that situation, and I know I let my country and teammates down. I am still sad to this day and wish it had been different. But it happened, and I learned from my mistakes.”
Despite his struggles at club level with limited appearances for Watford, Okoye has found stability with Udinese, playing a crucial role in helping the Italian side maintain their Serie A status. His performances have sparked interest from Serie A defending champions Inter Milan, who are seeking a deputy and potential replacement for Yann Sommer.
Regarding the link to Inter Milan, Okoye expressed his pride and focus on the upcoming season with Udinese. “Serie A is a very difficult championship. I am happy and grateful to be a Udinese player. There have been rumours, I know about those, that’s all. It is a source of pride to be associated with a great club. Whatever happens, I’m happy to be an Udinese player and can’t wait to return and start the new season in black and white.”
The 24-year-old also compared the quality of Serie A to other leagues, stating, “It’s a top championship. I haven’t played in many leagues, but for me, after the Premier League, Serie A is the best championship. I had to adapt to a lot of things because it’s really on another level. This country lives on football, and I feel it every day. It’s beautiful and pushes you to work even harder.”
