Finance Minister Highlights Ghana’s Sports Achievements in Mid-Year Budget Review

In his mid-year budget review on July 23, 2024, Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, outlined significant progress in the country’s sports sector, emphasizing the advancements in infrastructure and the remarkable performances of Ghanaian athletes.

Dr. Adam noted the substantial improvements in sports facilities and talent development, which have provided a solid foundation for athletes to excel. A major highlight of the year was Ghana’s successful hosting of the 13th African Games from March 4 to 23, 2024. The events were held at the newly constructed multi-purpose sports facility in Borteyman and the University of Ghana Sports Stadium. Ghana achieved its best performance at an international multi-sport event, securing sixth place on the medals table with a total of 69 medals: 19 gold, 29 silver, and 21 bronze.

“This remarkable performance at the 13th African Games is a testament to our commitment to sports development and the dedication of our athletes,” Dr. Adam stated. “The new facilities at Borteyman and the University of Ghana have provided a world-class environment for our athletes to shine.”

Additionally, the national amputee football team, the Black Challenge, triumphed in the 2024 African Amputee Football Cup of Nations in Egypt, earning a spot in the 2026 Amputee World Cup Tournament.

“The triumph of the Black Challenge at the African Amputee Football Cup of Nations is a proud moment for Ghana,” Dr. Adam said. “Their success underscores the resilience and talent of our athletes, and we are committed to supporting them as they prepare for the 2026 Amputee World Cup.”

Dr. Adam’s remarks highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance sports in Ghana, not only through infrastructure development but also by creating an environment where athletes can thrive on the international stage.
