Former Ghana assistant coach Herve Renard has ignited a debate by asserting that the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) is a superior tournament compared to the European Championship (Euros).
Renard criticized the predictability of the Euros, noting that a few teams are always clear favorites from the start. In contrast, he finds the AFCON far more exciting due to its unpredictable nature, where any team has a chance of winning.
“In the Euros, from the beginning, you know at least four or five teams that can win the trophy, but in Africa, all the teams are capable of winning the trophy,” Renard said, as reported by Sportblog247.com.
The Frenchman also emphasized the passionate atmosphere and surprising outcomes that characterize the AFCON. “For me, AFCON has a lot of fever, and it’s so interesting with many shocks. Many people love it,” he added.
Renard has a successful history in the AFCON, having led Zambia to victory in 2012 and the Ivory Coast in 2015. He remains the only coach to win the tournament with two different nations.
