Inter Milan-Linked Super Eagles Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye Aims to Lead Nigeria to World Cup Glory

Maduka Okoye, born in Germany to a Nigerian father, has reaffirmed his commitment to becoming the number one goalkeeper for the Super Eagles, according to Sportblog247.com.

The 24-year-old Udinese goalkeeper made his official debut for Nigeria under Gernot Rohr. He was the starting goalkeeper at the AFCON 2021 tournament, where an error led to Nigeria’s exit in the round of sixteen, sparking criticism from fans.

After being absent since 2022, Okoye received his first call-up when Finidi George included him in the 23-man squad for Nigeria’s FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Benin Republic and South Africa, serving as the second choice to Stanley Nwabali.

Following an impressive season with Udinese in Serie A, Okoye has been linked with potential moves to Inter Milan and Torino. Despite this, his primary focus remains on leading Nigeria to the World Cup.

“People will back Manuel Neuer if he makes errors because he’s done a lot for Bayern and Germany, but I’ve not given my best performances to the National team and I’m praying for the opportunity to give my best to Nigeria. It is what I’ve always wanted. I want to be the one who is carrying Nigeria to the World Cup and bringing the trophies home, but it is not easy. I know I didn’t give my best, but I want to give my all, to give it all for my Fatherland,” Okoye told Oma Akatugba in an interview.

Okoye hopes to be the starting goalkeeper when Nigeria begins their journey to qualify for the next AFCON tournament.
