Lesley Ugochukwu Withdraws from France’s Olympic Squad Amidst Nigeria Switch Speculation

Lesley Ugochukwu Withdraws from France’s Olympic Squad Amid Potential Switch to Nigeria

Nigeria-eligible defensive midfielder Lesley Chimuanya Ugochukwu has withdrawn from France’s squad for the 2024 Paris Olympics, according to Sportblog247.com.

Ugochukwu, 20, who joined Chelsea from Stade Rennais for £23.1 million, struggled to secure a regular spot in Chelsea’s midfield, making just 15 appearances across all competitions last season due to recurring injuries.

Initially named in Thierry Henry’s preliminary selection for France’s Olympic campaign, Ugochukwu was set to join French stars like Michael Olise and Jean-Philippe Mateta. However, The Athletic reports that the French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed Chelsea recalled Ugochukwu from the France Olympic squad.

Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea team is preparing for a pre-season tour in the United States, where they will face AFC Wrexham, Celtic, Club América, Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan. The Italian manager wanted Ugochukwu to be part of the pre-season squad, which prompted his withdrawal from the Olympic team. Chelsea is also exploring loan options for Ugochukwu, prioritizing Premier League clubs to help him gain experience.

Born in Rennes, France, Ugochukwu is of Igbo-Nigerian descent and holds dual nationality. He is the nephew of former Rennes and Super Eagles defender Onyekachi Apam. His withdrawal from the French team raises the possibility of him opting to play for Nigeria. Although he has represented France up to the U-23 level, he has also spent time in Nigeria after a hamstring injury.

In a recent Instagram post, the 1.9m tall midfielder mentioned spending time with family in Nigeria, but it is unclear whether he is open to playing for the three-time AFCON Champions in the future.

Meanwhile, his former French teammates will compete against the US, Guinea, and New Zealand in Group A of the Paris 2024 Olympics men’s football competition.
