Nigeria Faces Tough Competition from USA in Pursuit of Hervé Renard for Super Eagles Coach

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) is facing a significant challenge in securing Hervé Renard as the next head coach of the Super Eagles, according to Sportblog247.com.

The Super Eagles have been without a head coach since Finidi George resigned in June following disappointing results against South Africa and Benin Republic in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The NFF aims to appoint a foreign technical adviser to work alongside a yet-to-be-named Indigenous coach. Recent reports suggest that they have contacted Hervé Renard, a two-time AFCON-winning coach, for the position.

Renard is currently the head coach of the France women’s national team but has indicated his intention to leave the role after the Paris Olympic Games this summer.

However, Nigeria is not the only team interested in Renard. According to Nigerian journalist Colin Udoh, the United States and several Saudi Arabian clubs are also in negotiations with him.

Renard is a strong candidate to take charge of the United States men’s national team following the dismissal of Gregg Berhalter, who led the USMNT to an early exit at the 2024 Copa America. Other potential candidates for the US job, such as former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and former El Salvador coach Hugo Perez, have reportedly declined the offer.

The United States, having faced these rejections, might intensify their efforts to secure Renard, potentially outpacing Nigeria in the race for his signature.

Renard has a distinguished international coaching career, having successfully managed Saudi Arabia, Zambia, Côte d’Ivoire, and Morocco. He is the first coach to win the Africa Cup of Nations with two different teams and has appeared in the last two World Cup editions with Morocco in 2018 and Saudi Arabia in 2022.
