United Arab Emirates giants Al Wahda FC have completed the signing of Nigerian winger Philip Otele from Romanian club CFR Cluj, according to Sportblog247.com.
The 25-year-old Otele has signed a four-year deal with Al Wahda, committing to the club until the summer of 2028. Reports indicate he will earn €1.5 million annually, with Al Wahda paying a transfer fee of €3.5 million to CFR Cluj.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Otele said:
“I am extremely happy and excited for the upcoming challenges and competitions with Al Wahda. I am proud to wear this badge and grateful for the warm welcome and confidence from the club’s leadership and management.”
This move comes as a surprise, as Otele was recently linked with a potential transfer to one of Europe’s top leagues. English Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion had shown significant interest in Otele, but he chose to move to the UAE instead. Brighton’s pursuit of Otele was prominent before the departure of manager Roberto De Zerbi at the end of the 2023-2024 season.
Otele’s career includes stints with Kauno Žalgiris, Wolviston FC, and UTA Arad before joining CFR Cluj in July 2023. During his time at CFR Cluj, he had a standout season, scoring 18 goals in 40 appearances and finishing as joint-top scorer in the league alongside Florinel Coman of FC Steaua București. His impressive performances earned him recognition as Nigeria’s top player in Romania and a place in the league’s Team of the Season.
CFR Cluj has already prepared for Otele’s departure by securing the return of Adrian Păun to the club.
