Rivers United Eye Former Super Eagles Coach Finidi George for NPFL Return

Finidi George may soon return to coaching just days after stepping down as head coach of the Super Eagles, Sportblog247.com reports.

Finidi, who initially served as an assistant and caretaker coach, was appointed head coach of the Super Eagles in May. However, he resigned after only 40 days due to tensions with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). His tenure saw disappointing results against South Africa and Benin, leading the NFF to consider hiring a foreign coach as a technical adviser. Upset by the lack of trust, Finidi resigned immediately.

Now, Rivers United are reportedly considering Finidi for their head coach position, according to the Nation. The club’s management is looking to make changes after an unimpressive end to the season. Rivers United started well, reaching the quarter-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup before being eliminated by USM Alger of Algeria. However, they struggled in the league, finishing outside the top spots and failing to secure a continental ticket for the first time in three years. Enugu Rangers won the NPFL title this season with a game to spare, while Remo Stars finished as runners-up.

Finidi’s successful stint at Enyimba, where he won the league title in his first full season, could make him a valuable addition to Rivers United.
