Super Eagles Coach Announcement Coming Soon, Says Sports Minister
Senator John Owan Enoh, Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Development, has assured that the vacant Super Eagles coaching position will be filled soon as the search for a qualified candidate continues.
Following Finidi George’s resignation as Super Eagles coach after just two months due to poor results, the three-time African champions are in jeopardy of missing out on qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
Addressing a media parley in Abuja on Thursday, Enoh emphasized the technical nature of selecting a new coach and mentioned ongoing discussions with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). He highlighted the NFF’s responsibility to appoint a coach whose reputation would restore confidence among Nigerian football fans.
“The issue of the Super Eagles coach is very important and technical. The search is still ongoing, and when the time comes, the NFF will announce the name, not me. However, I am actively engaging with the NFF on this matter. I have urged the NFF to appoint a capable coach who can secure our qualification for the 2026 World Cup and the next African Nations Cup. We need a high-quality coach to restore Nigerian confidence,” Enoh stated.
The minister also announced upcoming renovations for the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja to ensure it can host Super Eagles games and CAF-organized competitions. Additionally, he revealed that the Borno State government has formally applied to the Sports Ministry for permission to allow the 2024 President Federation Cup champions, El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri, to host their CAF Confederation Cup home games at the stadium.
“We are working diligently to ensure that the Moshood Abiola National Stadium and others meet international standards for hosting the Super Eagles and other international matches. El Kanemi Warriors have applied to use the stadium as their home ground for CAF Confederation Cup games,” Enoh added.
