On last Friday’s episode of ‘The Big Fight Night’ on Omashi TV, national team boxers Sarah Apew and Perpetual Okaidja made a heartfelt appeal for support to continue pursuing their boxing aspirations. Representing the Black Hitter of Ghana, Sarah Apew from James Town Boxing Gym and Perpetual Okaidja from Black Panthers Gym were the first female athletes to feature on the popular show.
Sarah Apew, who also aspires to join the Ghana Armed Forces, shared her ambition to become a top professional boxer despite facing challenges. She highlighted that, although she won a gold medal in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) at the 13th African Games, she has not received any recognition or reward for her achievement.
Perpetual Okaidja, who also competed in the African Games and won gold in MMA, expressed disappointment at the lack of acknowledgment for her accomplishments but remains hopeful. Both boxers voiced their support for Algerian athlete Imane Khelif, who overcame discrimination to win gold at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Apew, originally from the Oti Region, spoke about her transition from football to boxing and emphasized the need for encouragement for those with unique talents. Okaidja, from Bukom, shared that her passion for boxing comes from her family’s strong connection to the sport.
The episode also featured Ms. Sarah Lotus Asare, Ghana’s first female matchmaker and WBC Cares Africa Representative, who added to the discussion on promoting female boxers.
