GBF Treasurer Mustapha Nettey Urges Focus on the Future of Ghana Boxing

Mustapha Nettey, Treasurer of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), has emphasized the need for early preparation of the national boxing teams, the Black Bombers (male) and Black Hitters (female), ahead of the next Commonwealth Games in two years and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

In an exclusive interview, Nettey expressed his disappointment that Ghana was not represented in boxing at the Paris 2024 Olympics, a sport that has historically brought the country significant recognition. He highlighted boxing’s contribution to Ghana’s Olympic success, with four medals to its nameโ€”one silver (1960) and three bronze (1964, 1972, 2020).

Nettey, who also serves as a Ring Announcer and Score Master, noted that the national boxing team will soon feature new talents as many of the Black Bombers have turned professional. He mentioned upcoming fighters like Jonathan Tetteh, Samuel Takyi, Mohammed Amadu, Mohammed Ayitey, and Theophilus Allotey as potential representatives.

He also revealed that the national youth team, under the guidance of Coach Charles Quartey, is being groomed to take over as the new elite fighters. Nettey called for the organization of a National Open Championship to provide opportunities for boxers from other regions and stressed the importance of international exposure through bilateral friendly games, particularly in Eastern Europe and Asia.

Having recently attended the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris with GBF Vice President Alhaji Dauda Fuseni, Nettey praised the event’s organization and urged Ghana to take the 2028 Olympic Games in the USA seriously, with a strategic plan to secure medals.
