Football icon Asamoah Gyan has distanced himself from any political affiliations, including ties to Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP). In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) page, the former Black Stars captain emphasized that his focus is on empowering the youth of Ghana and Africa through sports and philanthropy, asserting, “This is not about politics; I am fully independent from political influence.”
This clarification follows Gyan’s recent appointment as the lead figure for Youth and Sports on NPP Presidential Candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s Manifesto Committee ahead of the 2024 elections. Despite his role on the committee, Gyan’s statement aims to affirm his non-political stance, leaving the reason for this announcement unclear at present.
