Faisal Abubakar Retains WBO Africa Super Lightweight Title with Fifth-Round Knockout

Ghana’s Faisal Abubakar, also known as Poncho Power, successfully defended his WBO Africa Super Lightweight title with a fifth-round technical knockout victory over Nigerian Samuel Opaogun at the Bukom Boxing Arena on August 31, 2024.

Referee May Mensah Akakpo halted the fight in the fifth round after Opaogun was floored by a powerful punch. Although Samuel briefly regained his footing, he wobbled when asked to move forward, prompting the referee to end the bout.

Opaogun began the match with strong punches but struggled as the fight progressed, eventually suffering a cut on his eyelid. After recovering, he expressed a desire for a rematch and praised his Ghanaian fans, referring to the country as his second home.

Faisal, managed by PricelessLife Entertainment, thanked his supporters, the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), the WBO, and his trainers at the Charles Quartey Boxing Foundation Gym. He is eager to face bigger challenges and aims to break into the world’s top 10 in his next defense.

With a record of 17-0 (14 KOs), Abubakar previously won the WBO Africa Super Lightweight title by outpointing Ugandan Latibu Muwonge. Opaogun’s record now stands at 12 wins, 3 losses, and 1 draw in 16 fights.
