Ghanaian Champions Samartex and Nsoatreman Exit African Inter-Club Competitions

Ghana’s hopes in this year’s African inter-club competitions have been dashed, as both Samartex and Nsoatreman FC were eliminated from their respective tournaments on Saturday.

Samartex’s CAF Champions League Exit

Samartex, the Ghanaian champions, faced a disappointing exit from the CAF Champions League following a 2-0 defeat to Moroccan powerhouse Raja Casablanca in the second leg of their second-round matchup. This result confirmed a 4-2 aggregate victory for Raja, who advanced to the group stage, leaving Samartex to focus on their domestic campaign.

After a promising 2-2 draw in the first leg in Accra, Samartex entered the match with hope. However, Marouane Zila’s goal just before halftime shifted momentum in favor of Raja. Despite a spirited effort from the Timber Boys, coached by Nurudeen Amadu, they were unable to find the net. A late goal from Naoufel Zerhouni in the 88th minute sealed Samartex’s fate, ending their debut in Africa’s premier club competition. The club expressed optimism on social media, stating that the experience, though disappointing, offers valuable lessons for future improvement.

Nsoatreman’s CAF Confederation Cup Exit

Nsoatreman FC, the holders of the Ghana FA Cup, also faced elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup after a 1-0 defeat to CS Constantine in Algeria, concluding with a 3-0 aggregate loss. After losing 2-0 in the first leg in Accra, Nsoatreman fell behind early in the second leg when Zakaria Benchaa scored in the 19th minute. CS Constantine dominated the match, limiting Nsoatreman’s chances to mount a comeback. This defeat marks the end of their debut campaign in African competition.

Both clubs will now shift their focus to domestic competitions. Samartex will resume their Ghana Premier League campaign against Bibiani Gold Stars and Medeama SC, while Nsoatreman aims to defend their FA Cup title or compete for the Premier League, seeking another opportunity for continental football next season.
