Following Atalanta’s commanding 6-1 victory over Hellas Verona on Saturday, Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman shared his thoughts on his recent nominations for the prestigious Ballon d’Or and African Footballer of the Year awards.
Lookman led his team with an exceptional performance, scoring two goals and providing two assists at the Gewiss Stadium, marking a triumphant return after a quieter outing since the international break. Atalanta took control early, with Marten de Roon scoring in the sixth minute, assisted by Lookman, followed closely by a goal from Mateo Retegui. Lookman assisted Charles De Ketelaere for the third goal in the 14th minute, then found the net himself in the 29th and 34th minutes, contributing to an impressive home win.
In a post-match interview with DAZN, Lookman reflected on his Ballon d’Or nomination: “The nomination is special for me and the club. It’s a great moment. I’m very happy, last season’s successes were great and we need to continue like this.”
Expressing pride in his African POTY nomination, Lookman added, “Being nominated for this award is special because it concerns my country. I feel proud, and I have to keep working; only then can these awards come.”
This performance brought Lookman’s season tally to five goals and five assists in ten games, highlighting his consistent impact following Atalanta’s UEFA Europa League win last season.
