Nigeria still lead Group D in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, even as their match against Libya was postponed due to a hostage crisis at the airport. However, the gap at the top has narrowed as Benin and Rwanda have made strides towards qualification.
Benin, who recently defeated Rwanda 3-0, fell 2-1 in the return leg in Kigali. Despite the setback, Gernot Rohr’s Benin side hold second place in Group D with six points, just one behind Nigeria. Rwanda, with five points, remain contenders for a qualification spot. Libya, with only one point from three games, sit at the bottom of the group.
In other action, Gabon boosted their chances of qualifying with a 2-0 win over Lesotho, courtesy of goals from Shavy Babicka and Rody Junior Effaghe. Egypt secured their place at AFCON 2025 with a 1-0 win over Mauritania, as substitute Ibrahim Adel struck late in the game. Angola also sealed their qualification, making it four straight wins with a 1-0 victory over Niger.
Meanwhile, Sudan shocked Ghana with a 2-0 victory, thanks to quickfire goals from Ahmed Al Tash and Abdel-Rahman. Sudan, with seven points, need only to avoid defeat in one of their remaining two games to qualify, leaving Ghana at risk of missing the tournament.
Sierra Leone pulled off a surprise 1-0 win over reigning African champions Côte d’Ivoire. Amadou Bakayoko’s late goal gave the Leone Stars their first victory, but the Ivorians remain atop Group G with nine points. Zambia, in second place with seven points, edged out Chad 1-0.
DR Congo became the latest team to qualify for AFCON 2025, claiming a 2-0 win over Tanzania, marking their fourth straight victory. Group L has already been decided, with Burkina Faso and Senegal both on 10 points, booking their tickets to Morocco. Senegal secured their qualification with a 1-0 win over Malawi, thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Sadio Mané.
In Group K, Uganda defeated South Sudan 2-0, while Congo and South Africa drew 1-1.
