Benali Urges Southampton to Give More Opportunities to Paul Onuachu After Arsenal Loss

Southampton legend Francis Benali has called for striker Paul Onuachu to receive more playing time following his return to the team during the 3-1 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Despite the disappointing result, Benali remains optimistic about the 30-year-old’s potential after he made his first appearance for the club in 14 months. Onuachu, who replaced Mateus Fernandes in the 74th minute, had spent the previous season on loan at Trabzonspor, where he enjoyed a successful run, scoring 17 goals and providing four assists in 25 matches.

In his reflection on the match, Benali acknowledged Onuachu’s positive impact, writing for the Daily Echo. He noted that although Southampton faced challenges against Arsenal’s superior quality, Onuachu’s performance offered hope. “He made a mark on the team, and it looks like he could be an option, even though he looked close to an exit this summer. I still think we need to see more from him before we can start asking for him to be a starter, but his performance against Arsenal was a step in the right direction,” Benali explained. He concluded by mentioning that Onuachu’s opportunity likely arose due to Ross Stewart’s injury, suggesting that more chances could come for the Nigerian striker.
