CAF Issues Statement on Libya vs. Nigeria AFCON Qualifier, Match Postponed Amid Controversy

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has released an official statement clarifying the situation surrounding the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match between Libya and Nigeria. Contrary to earlier reports of a possible walkover, CAF confirmed that the match will not proceed as scheduled.

CAF stated, “The TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Qualifier fixture between Libya and Nigeria will not take place as scheduled tonight. The matter will be referred to the competent CAF bodies.”

This development follows the Nigerian Super Eagles’ ordeal at Libya’s Al-Abraq International Airport. Upon arrival, the team, including the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) President and officials, faced several logistical and treatment issues, including delays, lack of facilities, and no support from the Libyan Football Federation. The NFF claimed the treatment was retaliation for a previous misunderstanding in Nigeria, a claim they strongly denied.

Nigeria had previously secured a 1-0 win over Libya in Uyo, taking them to seven points in their qualifying group.
