Super Eagles caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen has opened up about the harrowing ordeal the Nigerian national team faced in Libya, as reported by Sportblog247.com.
The team, in Libya for the second leg of their 2025 AFCON qualifier against the Mediterranean Knights, endured nearly 20 hours of mistreatment at a remote airport.
Eguavoen detailed the traumatic experience, thanking the Libyans for eventually allowing them to leave but highlighting the inhumane conditions, including a lack of food and water. He noted, “We were held hostage. We could not have played this match under these conditions.”
CAF is expected to investigate the incident, while the Libya Football Federation has condemned Nigeria’s withdrawal from the game, escalating tensions between the two nations.
