U-20 World Cup winner Daniel Agyei has expressed deep appreciation for goalkeeper trainer Eric Amponsah, who supported him in overcoming the heartbreak of Ghana’s 2010 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final loss to Egypt. Agyei, who shared the Black Stars squad with players like André Ayew, Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu, and Samuel Inkoom, highlighted Amponsah’s crucial role during his time at Medeama SC.
Reflecting on his career journey in an interview with Citi Sports, Agyei shared, “The AFCON final… you miss it, you couldn’t win the trophy for the nation. Sometimes, it can be traumatizing. I thought we had let the nation down. But when I joined Medeama, they brought in Eric Amponsah.”
He continued, “Every game I lost at Medeama, he wasn’t there. Whenever we drew or won, he was always there. He always psyched me up.”
Eric Amponsah currently serves as the goalkeeper trainer for the Sudan national team and has previously worked with Accra Hearts of Oak, Medeama, and Berekum Chelsea.
