Derek Boateng: New Black Stars Players Need to Understand the Weight of the Jersey

Former Ghana midfielder Derek Boateng has expressed concerns that the current Black Stars players may not yet grasp the importance of representing their country. He believes that the younger, less experienced squad lacks the commitment and dedication expected when donning the national team jersey, which symbolizes the hopes of over 30 million people.

Boateng noted that as the new coach and young players adapt to the pressures of international play, it is a learning process for them. “I think the coach is new, and we have young players who don’t yet understand what it means to represent Ghana. They need to learn what they must go through to earn that honor,” he said.

The Black Stars are set to face Sudan at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday, October 10, before travelling to Libya for the return match on October 15. Currently, Ghana sits third in Group F of the AFCON qualifiers, having secured only one point from two games. Winning both upcoming matches is crucial for improving their chances of qualifying for the tournament in Morocco.
