Concerns have eased for over 20 Nigerian footballers based in Turkey after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the eastern region of Malatya on Wednesday morning. While several buildings partially collapsed, Turkish authorities confirmed there were no casualties reported.

Among the Nigerian players in Turkey are some of the Super Eagles’ key stars. Victor Osimhen, who is on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, was a notable name raising concern. Other prominent players include Kenneth Omeruo (Kasımpaşa), Bright Osayi-Samuel (Fenerbahce), and Anthony Nwakaeme (Trabzonspor).

Midfielders Oghenekaro Etebo (Gençlerbirliği) and Bonke Innocent (Adanaspor), along with Olanrewaju Kayode of Şanlıurfaspor, were also based in areas affected by the tremor. Fortunately, all Nigerian players are safe, and no injuries were reported.

The earthquake, which caused panic in several provinces including Diyarbakir and Elazig, follows the devastating 7.8-magnitude quake in February 2023 that claimed over 53,000 lives in Turkey and Syria. Despite the scare, Nigerian players have resumed their football activities while officials continue to monitor the situation.
