Eguavoen Explains Tactical Shift to 4-2-3-1 in Super Eagles’ Win Over Libya

Super Eagles interim coach Augustine Eguavoen has explained his decision to switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation in Nigeria’s 1-0 victory over Libya in their AFCON 2025 qualifier. Previously using a 3-4-3 setup, Eguavoen shifted tactics to strengthen the midfield, citing issues with losing numbers in central areas during the last two games. By adopting a back four and adding more midfield presence with Ndidi, Onyedika, or Onyeka, the Super Eagles controlled possession and limited Libya’s chances to just two shots, neither on target.

Eguavoen’s tactical tweak proved successful, but it remains to be seen if he will maintain the same formation in the upcoming return fixture.
