Former Nigerian national team goalkeeper, Peter “Apo” Fregene, has passed away at the age of 77 following a long battle with health issues. Fregene, a 1968 Olympian, died peacefully surrounded by his wife Tina and two children.
The news of his passing was confirmed by former Nigerian international and sports journalist Segun Odegbami, who expressed gratitude to all those who supported Fregene during his illness. Odegbami also highlighted the efforts of generous individuals who helped fund Fregene’s treatment at Obule Medical Centre in Sapele, Delta State, following an earlier public appeal for assistance.
While the football community mourns the loss, Odegbami called attention to the lack of support for retired athletes, urging for the establishment of a welfare scheme for Nigeria’s sports veterans.
Peter Fregene will be remembered as a dedicated athlete and a national icon.
