Francis Ngannou’s Triumphant Return to MMA: Fighting Through Grief for His Son

Ngannou overcomes loss and emotional struggle in his powerful return to MMA at PFL: Battle of the Giants.

Francis Ngannou made an emotional comeback to MMA on October 19 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, after nearly three years away from the cage. Facing Renan Ferreira in the PFL’s heavyweight superfight, Ngannou (18-3) secured a TKO victory, fighting through the immense grief of losing his 15-month-old son, Kobe. Dominating from the start, Ngannou paid tribute to his late son, channelling his pain and doubts into his performance.

Reflecting on his emotional journey, Ngannou admitted that no amount of external support could match the depth of his sorrow, but his victory proved he could still compete at the highest level, despite the personal tragedy.

“This fight wasn’t just about winning,” Ngannou shared. “It was about proving to myself that I could keep going, even when the pain felt unbearable.”
